The Plant-maker Studio offers unique "nature craft" experiences for all ages! Enjoy the frozen beauty of colorful winter berries, bare branches, evergreens, snow, and ice in the Arboretum's winter landscape. Look for the hardy non-migratory birds that remain in Minnesota all winter long. Discover which plants you can grow to provide winter food and shelter for wildlife. Create a nourishing natural seed ornament to feed the birds outside your window.

The Plant-maker Studio offers unique "make with plants" experiences for all ages! Refresh your senses and bolster your immune system with basil, the aromatic, antiviral, king of herbs. Sample a flavorful basil recipe and gather ideas for how to use basil in your kitchen. Create, decorate, and plant a pot of basil to take home and enjoy.

Milkweed, Monarchs & More

Discover the plants that nourish and support your favorite Minnesota butterflies. Plant rose milkweed to take home, a favorite for monarch butterflies to lay their eggs on, and you can have your own monarch caterpillar nursery in your garden. Zoom in with microscopes for a close up view of butterflies and nectar flowers. Find out how to participate in citizen science programs to advance understanding about the migratory monarch population. Next, head to the Bee and Pollinator Center to discover more about the bees and butterflies, the work crew who do the essential work of pollinating our gardens and crops.

Blooming Branches Ink Painting
ALL AGES

Be inspired by Chinese and Japanese ink brush paintings of plants to create your own mini masterpiece. We will examine branches, tree trunks, and tree blossoms, to inform our ink branch and blossom paintings. Practice tending a zen dry garden of stone, moss, and sand. Find out about the Arboretum's newly opened Chinese garden and the major architectural differences between Japanese and Chinese Gardens. Then head outside to see the summer Origami in the Gardens sculptures and award winning arboretum gardens.

Hand Made Plant Paper

FREE with gate admission

Create hand-made paper out of Arboretum plants to take home! Use our diverse plant palette including; colorful flower petals, fragrant herbs, and plants known for their strong fibers. Zoom in with microscopes and get a close up view of fiber plants such as cotton, flax, and papyrus. Then, head outside to visit the summer art installation, Origami in the Gardens.
