Recycled glass rocks and stone rocks within a metal frame can serve as a hedge in a landscape. The lines of this design echo the planted hedge that frames the Dahlberg Welcoming Terrace.

What is a gabion wall? It's a traditional engineering structure used to tame erosion or for fortification. Early uses included protecting the banks of the Nile and in Medieval forts. The word is from the old Italian gabbione, for 'big cage'. Modules once wicker-woven to hold sand or soil are now usually wire cages filled with free-draining rocks or concrete. According to the designer, 'native bedrock in the end-caps represent the Arboretum's agricultural and horticultural roots. Recycled glass rocks in teal green are internally lit by energy-efficient LEDs to bring forward the sizzle of the future.'
