How to Become a Minnesota Landscape Arboretum Volunteer

Our volunteers play a vital role in the Arboretum's success, contributing their time, skills and energy every day. Opportunites to work with plants and people abound - in gardens and greenhouses, with school visits or special events, in research labs and the mail room. Join in, meet new people, learn new things and help the Arboretum keep growing.

Signing up to volunteer at the Arboretum is a self-directed process. Find out if it's the right fit for you by following these THREE easy steps.

STEP ONE

Please review our Frequently Asked Questions page. Once you have carefully read the entire FAQ document, please proceed to STEP TWO.

STEP TWO

Review the upcoming New Volunteer Orientation schedule by CLICKING HERE. Once you have selected an orientation date you would like to attend, be sure to follow the link in the document to register online.

STEP THREE

Attend your selected orientation where we'll talk about types of volunteer opportunities, what to expect when volunteering, the benefits of logging hours, University of Minnesota policies and trainings, and how to complete the required paperwork to get started. All volunteers must complete a background check and become members before actively volunteering on Arboretum grounds.

There are fees associated with membership and with the preliminary intake process. Proceeds benefit the Arboretum by financially supporting our programs and facilitating outreach. Cost should never be a deterrent to volunteering. Subsidies for partial or full payment of these fees are offered when requested and require a commitment of 25 volunteer hours per year. Here is the breakdown:

  1. $40 New Volunteer Package - one time cost. This covers the background, home delivery of name tag, and entry into our database to receive the Volunteer News, special offers, and invitations to volunteer events.
  2. $60 to $1,000 Membership. Membership has varying levels that you can choose according to your interst. A Solo memberhip is available for those who request a subsidy.

Becoming a Minnesota Landscape Arboretum Volunteer

Our volunteers play a vital role in the success and maintenance of the MN Landscape Arboretum and its beautiful gardens.  Without volunteers the Arboretum could not be the premier public garden that it is!

  • We are engaged with over 700 volunteers, some participate year round in a wide range of roles.
  • Arboretum volunteers donate on average over 44,000 hours of their valuable time each year!
  • By joining the ranks of current volunteers, you too can contribute to the Arboretum with your time and talents. Volunteers support us in many ways, including memberships, donations, and skills.

Thank you for your interest in a volunteering at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum!
