Blooming Branches Ink Painting
ALL AGES

DATES Saturdays and Sundays through July

Be inspired by Chinese and Japanese ink brush paintings of plants to create your own mini masterpiece. We will examine branches, tree trunks, and tree blossoms, to inform our ink branch and blossom paintings. Practice tending a zen dry garden of stone, moss, and sand. Find out about the Arboretum's newly opened Chinese garden and the major architectural differences between Japanese and Chinese Gardens. Then head outside to see the summer Origami in the Gardens sculptures and award winning arboretum gardens.

Hand Made Plant Paper

Create hand-made paper out of Arboretum plants to take home! Use our diverse plant palette including; colorful flower petals, fragrant herbs, and plants known for their strong fibers. Zoom in with microscopes and get a close up view of fiber plants such as cotton, flax, and papyrus. Then, head outside to visit the summer art installation, Origami in the Gardens.

Sweetgrass Braids

Meet sweetgrass, a vanilla scented grass with the power to repel mosquitoes. Learn how to grow it and find out about its cultural significance to native people. Create a sweet smelling braid or sweetgrass bundle to take home. Then head outside to the ornamental grass collection to enjoy the grasses at peek beauty.

When other tree branches are bare, the hardy evergreen trees keep our spirits green all winter long. Experiment with texture and form as you create one of a kind plant prints using an assortment of pine needles and cones. Can you tell the difference between fir, spruce, cedar, and pine? Use your senses to learn their unique traits and how to tell these fragrant green trees apart.

Corn Creations

Bring your friends and family for a fun filled afternoon focused on corn. Delight in the diversity and beauty of dried corn as you string jewel colored corn kernels to create a bracelet. In the kitchen you can help grind cornmeal and prepare cornbread, tamales, or tortillas to taste. Test your knowledge about corn with an interactive trivia game all about the origins, uses, and growing of corn. Go home with a greater understanding of corn, one of Minnesota's top crops, recipe ideas, and a colorful corn bracelet.

The best chance of being enrolled in a sold out class is to add your name to the waitlist. Click the orange "waitlist" button and complete the steps, or call 612-301-1210. There is no obligation to register if a spot opens. If the waitlist shows enough demand, additional class sessions may be added.
