A great introduction to day camp-full of variety, fun, and nature-play: meet new friends, explore the Arboretum, look for tadpoles, and play in the mud! Discover the magical fairies that protect our plants, and use bits of nature, imagination, and engineering to build them a special gift in the woods. Each day will include a short circle time, a snack, a planting project, a themed activity or two, and time for nature-play. Make a suncatcher, a fairy garden and other plantings to bring home. It's harvest time in the garden! Investigate the insides of fruits and vegetables, explode open seeds, and make ketchup with your feet. Prepare delicious garden snacks and take home some beauty of the garden. Each day will include a short circle time, a snack, a planting project, and an adventure or two! On the final day of camp we are going to really dig in and thoroughly play in the mud, in the really messy way that makes kids cheer and parents cringe. With the help of a hose and a change of clothes, kids will be squeaky clean again before it's time to go home! Limit 16, Learning Center

Explore, hike, forage, collect, build, and imagine an epic path through some of the hidden places at the Arboretum! Awaken your sense of adventure and creativity while we play outside. Each day will include a snack and playing outside, but will otherwise unfold in its own way depending on the group and the weather, etc. The first session will have a special focus on creating some natural art in the vein of artist Andy Goldsworthy. The second session will focus slightly more on hiking to explore the Arboretum and practice survival skills such as reading a compass and poisonous plant identification. Adults, visit BeOutThere.org or ChildrenAndNature.org for inspiration and to discover the latest on the critical importance of nature play. Limit 14, Learning Center

It's A Snap! Photography And Basic Photo Editing for 2nd - 4th Grade Grads (993-06-16-15)

Instructor: Willis Bowman, experienced Arboretum day camp staff; also an engineer, artist and co-designer/builder of the Arboretum's "Under the Oak" nature play area

Hike through the woods and around water to find little miracles, discovered by looking through a camera lens. Learn how to use your digital camera better in the field and then how to edit photos on a computer to take them to the next level. Select your best photos for a slide show on the last day. Requirements: a digital camera with SD card and a laptop with (free) Picasa photo software installed. (Sorry, no tablets.) Limit 14, Learning Center
